A friend recently shared an image from one of the iowa caucus polling places and asked me if it looked safe and secure: https://vid.newsweek.com/iowans-seen-voting-pieces-paper-collected-paper-bag-tallies-578075
I replied:
It’s secure enough – generally my understanding is your vote itself is actually public in most caucuses. And they were only doing a single vote with no real votes so once people had cast their vote they were free to leave but I know that in almost all polling places many people stuck around a lot longer.
Paper ballots, hand counted. All done in under an hour. Far more secure than what we currently have.
A standardized ballot might be nice – but in some places they literally just STAND in quadrents and are counted.
Meanwhile, EVERYTHING we know about the current (2020/2022 and likely 2024) voting system is shrouded in mystery. It’s INTENTIONALLY NON-TRANSPARENT and complicated.
